Aliens RPG Canceled, Grown Men Cry

By Chris Cesarano

Don’t get me wrong. I was never sold on an Aliens game being an RPG to begin with. I tried to think of how it could work while capturing the atmosphere and style of the films, and I just couldn’t do it. Aliens doesn’t seem to fit the genre very well. But don’t tell that to Obsidian’s forum members, who are lashing out at Sega very strongly about this cancellation.

Considering that the game was rumored back in February to be canceled, this comes as no surprise. Let’s also not forget that there has been no news on the game since its announcement in 2006, which only infuriates even more that Aliens: Colonial Marines won’t be releasing until after Aliens vs. Predator in 2010. That is, assuming rumors of Gearbox also losing funds from Sega aren’t true.

The official response from Sega was that “the Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release”. Apparently, that type of game is limited to first-person shooter.

For the most part, Sega has proven to be an excellent publisher for external studios, but despite my excitement for the new Aliens vs. Predator I can’t help but feel they have been making poor use of this license.
