Microsoft Releasing New Xbox Maybe Sorta

By Chris Cesarano

imageAccording to a report listed on 1Up, Microsoft is allegedly planning on releasing a new variation of their console targeted towards a more casual market. Aside from coming with Natal, they also plan on doing some additional hardware modifications. The idea is that this new console, and other hardware jumps to come, will be more “iterative”, such as the evolution from the Nintendo DS to the Lite and then to the current DSi.

So instead of buying a better system within a short amount of time, you are simply buying the same machine with a few modifications all over again. That sounds so much better.

Of course, this is all rumor for the time being and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Though I’m skeptical Natal can be ready by 2010, I think it is more important to consider whether the market itself will be ready. I can’t imagine a lot of people wanting to buy their machine a second time for a few additional features, and I don’t like the idea of missing out on better hardware down the line. I’m still pretty miffed about not getting an HDMI port on my 360 when they’ve become standard now, not to mention the outrageous prices for hard drives.

If Microsoft truly plans on releasing a new iterative console, then at the very least they should work on making hardware upgrades for those that have already invested into their product a bit more affordable.
