Molyneux Says Rare Is Having An Identity Crisis
By Chris Cesarano
There’s something about Peter Molyneux that, every time he talks, you kinda just want to massage your temples and say “Petey boy, have you ever listened to yourself? Do you realize how you sound?”
In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Peter Molyneux stated that he wants to help Rare “have more of an identity”. To him, they are very secretive and, despite being such a talented team, do not come public with a lot of games and information. After all, people have been lamenting the absence of Rare from this past E3, looking forward to their next project.
“I just want to give them the confidence to tell the world what they’re doing,” Molyneux said in the interview, and continued “I hope you’re going to see more from Rare and I want to help them get well known.” All well and good, but one of the greatest problems Molyneux himself has faced is talking too much about his own game titles, especially in terms of features that aren’t guaranteed to make it in. While Petey-boy managed to keep his lips sealed a bit better for Fable 2, well, he’s still so eccentric that I’m pretty sure he has no understanding of how regular people think. His identity, and thus the identity of Lionhead Studios, is to talk as if you’re making a life changing experience and deliver what is merely a pretty good game. It’s like if Applebee’s spent two hours telling you how amazing their food is and you will never be able to have a cheeseburger from another restaurant after it, and when you’re done you just smile and say “that’s a pretty good burger”. No life change, just a good burger.
As it is, I like Rare’s identity. They make imaginative titles, aren’t afraid to step outside the boundaries of beloved franchises (such as with the latest Banjo Kazooie), and whatever they come up with next you can be sure it will be different from any other studio. I’d say Rare has enough of an identity and doesn’t need anyone to come in and tell them how to act.
